Hi! Iām Dannette McGrew
I grew up on a farm in rural Northern California, joined the local fire department at 17, and became an EMT the next year. I discovered a love for helping people, both on their best and worst days. Several years of small-town EMS took their toll on me, and I realized that though I had been raised in a Christian home, lack of solid Biblical teaching had left gaps, and I was unequipped to understand the suffering I was seeing. I left emergency medicine, and over the next few years, went through a process of questioning and reforming my own faith in order to understand the broken world I found myself in. On the other side, I had a solid foundation and a renewed hope. I also still had a bug - I missed working in the medical field.
During my first pregnancy, I devoured every piece of information I could get my hands on in order to be prepared for birth. I was amazed at the human body, but surprised to learn how badly our country ranks in maternal mortality, cesarean rates, and how so much of it seemed preventable. Throughout my own journey of pregnancy and birth, I learned the importance of having a support system, and I became determined to be that support for others.
To me, the primary role of doula is one of a servant. Whether that's helping you prepare a birth plan, making sure you stay hydrated during labor, pointing you to additional resources in the community, or listening as you process a difficult birth, there is no job too big or small. My faith compels me to be as educated and skilled in my craft as possible. My goal is to provide you with education and information, helping you understand all of your options so you can make informed decisions about your birth. I'm also here to laugh with you, cry with you, and support you in any way I can, walking beside you as your birth companion.
I obtained my Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator certifications through the Biblical Birth School, where I sought to combine excellent knowledge of physiological birth with a solid Biblical understanding of the theology of birth. I later took an additional course through the same school in order to become a Brewer Diet Coach.
